The Brain-Eating Amoeba
A brain-eating amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, is found lurking in the New Orleans water supply. It causes a deadly form of meningitis when inhaled through the nose. It has killed two children this summer. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not know how the amoeba came into the water supply. One similar case happened in Australia, the water supply was "overheated and under-disinfected". The contaminated water had led to many deaths. The early symptoms of the infection include a severe headache, fever, nausea and vomiting. People who have been infected may experience seizures, stiff necks, confusion and hallucinations. They are all caused by the nasal cavity in the brain.
I chose this article because I found this interesting. I thought it would inform others about what's happening in the water. This could inform them about the dangers of warm water. This could be a precaution for others. I told this to my mom and now she knows how to take precaution, if and when we go swimming in a pool in the future. I find that this is another reason why we should take care of our oceans. If we do not care or protect them, many similar cases of these might happen again.
Now that we have learned that there are some brain-eating amoeba out there, what now? What do we do now to prevent that from happening around the world? If you haven't clicked on the link already, I'd suggest you do it. Right now. Fortunately for us, the CDC gave a list on how to take precautions so you can prevent from contacting the amoeba.
