There's a New Dolphin Species!
In the waters off of northern Australia, scientists dolphin DNA and other analysis to uncover a new "fourth" Sousa dolphin species. This new dolphin is a Humpback dolphin. Scientists are now figuring out what to do next. They are deciding to divide the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins into three species, but since that is what they call "new to science", they are unsure of what to name them. By reading the article, I can see that the scientists are going to use this new information to collect data and make sure the marine animals are protected.
As usual, I'm just going on Yahoo!, looking at all the interesting news when I come upon this article. I clicked on it immediately. It's quite a coincidence, actually. Just last week, Mrs. Ogo were showing us the songs of different kinds of whales, porpoises and dolphins. And just now, I scramble onto this - an article news showing pictures and information about this newly discovered marine animal species. This is just awesome news. Why not have a scraMS on this? ;D
What do we do now? Wellp, if I were a scientist, I'd definitely study more on the "new to science" thing. I'd love to hang out with a bunch of other smart dudes and dudettes and try to figure out how to name the new humpback dolphin species. We could document what we find.. But, I'm not a scientist... Not yet, anyway. But since I'm a high school student, all I have to do is stay tuned to what's going on. And maybe have some "smart marine animal" conversation in class. xP
